Waitresses in the sky and ‘one of the worst places’ to be a girl

Another week, another condescending advert from Sussex Coast College in the local press. This time its slogan ‘Be who you want to be’ was pasted alongside an image of a female air steward or waitress in the sky. Is this really all that young people in Hastings are being offered by the way of aspirations? Coincidentally this week also saw the report from Plan International UK /University of Hull that concluded that Hastings was in the bottom 10 local authority areas for the quality of life for girls. The five markers included poverty levels and GCSE results and the percentage of girls under 18 not in employment, education or training. The Conservative proposals to bring back secondary modern style schools in which the majority of children are written off as failures will do nothing to improve education locally – nor to raise aspirations. Nor will the setting of low and gender based expectations by existing educational institutions!
