Castle Ward report (February 2016)

Your Ward Councillors regularly attend meetings of:

  • Castle Ward Forum
  • St Andrews Square Residents Association
  • White Rock and America Ground Business Group
  • Castle Ward Police Panel

In addition we visit and attend coffee mornings where we talk and listen to residents in Homedane House, Holmebury House and Mount Pleasant Court.

We meet with residents regularly to provide support and advice on issues with housing, benefits, planning applications, noisy neighbours to name a few of the problems encountered.

In 2016 we are looking at new venues for holding surgeries following the success of our recent meetings held at The Plough.

Parking and highways are always an issue and with Godfrey we have been providing advice to residents in Milward Road area regarding proposed changes to their permit parking to help them find parking spots nearer to their homes.

1. Working with Castle Ward Forum and Hastings Borough Council new gates have been fitted to an alley at the bottom of the Claremont Steps stopping anti-social behaviour.
2. New larger bins with lids have been installed in Cornwallis Street and hard standing provided to help keep the area clean and free from rubbish and a new bin will be installed in Brook Street shortly.

2016 will see the re-opening of our Pier and, along with the work on the White Rock Baths, will make the whole area become more alive!!

Ward Walkabouts

Judy carries out regular walks around the ward – if you see us please come and say ‘Hi’. We report on properties to our Grotbuster Team to follow up, we monitor areas of dog fouling and liaise with street cleaning teams to clear, we check out the state of our roads and report on to your County Councillor, Godfrey Daniel, where there are potholes. We monitor the use of the new seagull proof bags and work with council officers to make sure they are used properly. Currently we are looking at the new street lighting system and its impact on streets in our ward, particularly on the West Hill where there are issues with the Victorian lamposts which, with Godfrey and county officers, we are looking to resolve.

During the year we have been involved in fighting to keep the bus services operating throughout Hastings and St Leonards but especially in our Ward. The fight has been a mass effort with all of the local councillors involved. Whilst we have been reasonably successful there is still an issue with the lack of buses up to the West Hill after 6pm which we are bringing to the attention of both East Sussex County Council and Stagecoach.
Along with the buses we are also working to improve existing cycle paths and look at putting in place new routes.
Also of course our train links are vital for many of our residents and again we are putting pressure on both train providers and the government to improve the services.

Campaigning against NHS cuts

We are also currently involved in campaigning against cuts to our NHS and looking for more support for our GP surgery in the town centre.

Root 1066

Root 1066 Logo Colour x 22016 will be a significant year for Hastings with lots of events planned to commemorate the 950 years since the Battle of Hastings under the Root 1066 banner. This will bring a lot of visitors into our town and help our local economy which in turn will benefit our residents.

If you have any issues or concerns please get in touch with us. We are working hard to make Castle Ward a cleaner, safer, better place to live!!
