This month’s General Committee meeting of the Hastings and Rye Labour Party will be held in the fully accessible Sussex Room of the White Rock Theatre opposite the pier. Apart from reports, including from Peter Chowney, leader of the council, there are several motions up for discussion. They include ones critical of the national bureaucracy of the Labour Party in restricting the voting rights of members, and calling on the national general secretary to reinstate suspended members and for the rules of the party to be applied consistently.
We will also discuss a motion calling for a full public inquiry into the actions of the police at the Orgreave coking plant on 18 June during the 1984 -85 miners’ strike. The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign has been lobbying the Home Office to obtain this for some years. Apart from being a nationally important issue given the military – style policing employed on that day it is also particularly relevant locally given that Amber Rudd is now Home Secretary.
All members are very welcome – but only delegates from branches can vote. Members should also be receiving details of the meeting via their branch secretaries. If you have not received this please email Jonathan Lee the local party secretary: [email protected]
