It is both an honour and a special responsibility to have been elected as a Labour councillor in Baird Ward. My priority is to fully represent the diversity, creativity and commitment of Baird residents; together, I know, we will make this community thrive and continue to grow into a better place in which to live.In every street across Baird Ward people are asking themselves the same questions: How can I afford the utilities bill? When will the gutter get fixed? What employment opportunities are there for my children? Who’s going to deal with the kids on the street? This road is getting unsafe – whose job is it to fix it? Who can help me be more mobile in my home? How can I afford to go to college? Is anyone listening?
Over my term of office, I will work to answer these anxieties, by listening, acting and advocating, case by case. In this way I will seek to consolidate and build upon Cllr. Mike Turner’s success in striving towards making Baird Ward a better and fairer place to live.
Each and every resident of Baird Ward and Hastings and St. Leonards: mum and dad, son and daughter; the successful local entrepreneur; the infirm and frail; the young couple planning a family; are all equally expected, to accept less and pay more for the basic utilities and services they receive.
It is a mark of the success of your Local Labour controlled Council that its stands alone as the only Labour administration in the Tory controlled south east.
It is essential, therefore, that we continue our fight to conserve the achievements that regeneration and public investment have brought to our neighbourhoods, both in Baird and across Hastings. Together we can secure the means to retain services and community ownership, to conserve control of public assets and sustain accountability at a local level. Together we can act to protect the employment and training opportunities public investment has provided for local people.
By voting for Labour in Baird you’ve challenged the Con-Dem Government’s systematic attack on women at work and in the home where juggling the bills gets ever more difficult. A Labour vote has expressed our determination to protect jobs and opportunities for all working people. Cllr Mike Turner and I will work to find ways to ensure women in our ward do not disproportionately carry the burden of Tory cuts.
With Cllr. Mike Turner, I will work tirelessly for every resident and in every neighbourhood in the ward.
