A LOCAL councillor

I have lived in Ore for most of the last 25 years and been actively involved in the local community. I was a governor of Red Lake School for 14 years and am currently secretary of Ore Community Land Trust and a committee member of Red Lake Residents’ Association. I am also a Friend of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve.

I may not have been born in Hastings but it has been my home for most of the last 30 years. I have previously lived in Ely, York, Manchester, Oldham and Peterborough as well as Greece and France and I know that Hastings is the best place to live.

I taught modern languages for many years around the UK as well as English to speakers of other languages in Greece and France as well as Hastings. I then worked in the Civil Service for nearly 15 years before taking early retirement in December 2010.

Since 2003 I have been a director of the local Credit Union and president for the past 8 years.

Ore Ward was neglected by successive councillors for many years. Things started to change with the election of Michael Wincott in 2010. I am very keen to build on these efforts to ensure that Ore is a much pleasanter place in which to live and work.

Richard’s views:

Anti-social behaviour
The behaviour of small groups of people can make life a misery for many residents in different parts of the ward. Whether it be noisy neighbours, criminal damage, litter or more serious violence and intimidation, we must do more to work with the police and other agencies to stop this.

Environment
Ore in Bloom and Ore Community Land Trust are doing excellent work to improve the quality of life in the area and I fully support their efforts. We must do all we can to ensure that our green spaces are maintained and made more accessible to more people.

Transport
I am appalled at the cost of public transport. To pay over £2 to travel into town is outrageous. We must find ways to reduce this and make bus travel much more affordable.
